In the first part of this article, we bring you a brief overview of some of the most emblematic French wine regions. From AOCs and grape varieties to soils and specific characteristics, join us on a tour of the wine regions of France.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_large\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2><strong>Champagne<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Eight grape varieties are permitted under the Champagne appellation, however <strong>Pinot Noir<\/strong>, <strong>Pinot Meunier<\/strong> and <strong>Chardonnay<\/strong> are the three main ones used. These three varieties are planted in equal proportions, over 80% of which on <strong>limestone<\/strong> which is the typical bedrock in Champagne.<\/p>\n<p>The other grapes allowed, referred to as the \u201cforgotten varieties\u201d are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Voltis. The region has <strong>319 \u201c<em>Crus<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> or premium plots spread across four subregions: Montagne de Reims, C\u00f4te des Blancs, Marne Valley and C\u00f4te des Bar.<\/p>\n<p>The region\u2019s chalk galleries or \u201c<strong><em>cray\u00e8res<\/em><\/strong>\u201d offer the ideal conditions of temperature and humidity for cellaring Champagne and many are open to visitors. In total, there are over 100 kilometres of galleries in the area housing Champagne beneath ground.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_large\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Alsace<\/h2>\n<p>The iconic grape varieties in Alsace are <strong>Riesling<\/strong>, <strong>Gewurztraminer<\/strong>, <strong>Pinot Gris<\/strong> and <strong>Sylvaner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This fully-fledged wine region bordering on Germany has a <strong>wide array of subsoil types<\/strong>, including limestone, marl, granite, schist, sandstone and gneiss. It benefits from an advantageous location edging up to the Vosges Mountains which protect it from westerly winds and rain.<\/p>\n<p>Alsatian wines are recognizable by the unique shape of their bottle, the <strong>\u201c<em>flute d<\/em>\u2019<em>Alsace<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>, which is slimmer and taller than the traditional wine bottle.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_large\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Jura<\/h2>\n<p>The wine region of Jura covers an 80-kilometre stretch in the Revermont region. The bedrock dates from the <strong>Jurassic period<\/strong> \u2013 which takes its name from the Jura Mountains \u2013 and is composed of hard limestone, marl and clay.<\/p>\n<p>This region produces a <strong>great panoply of wines<\/strong>, including sparkling, dry, and sweet wine, not forgetting of course <strong>vin jaune<\/strong>. There are four main appellation areas for Jura wines: L\u2019\u00c9toile, C\u00f4tes du Jura, Arbois and Ch\u00e2teau-Chalon.<\/p>\n<p>The most commonly used varieties are Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. Jura\u2019s iconic <strong>vin jaune<\/strong> comes from Ch\u00e2teau Chalon. This wine is made in an oxidative manner that is traditional to the region and shows aromas of nuts, almonds and even spices. As well as vin jaune, you can also find the sweet wine <strong>vin de paille<\/strong>, which is another speciality of the region and the fortified wine <strong>Macvin du Jura<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_large\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Savoie<\/h2>\n<p>The wine region of Savoie has <strong>its<\/strong> <strong>own specific grape varieties<\/strong> that are little known to the wider public. They go by the names of Altesse, Molette, Mondeuse Blanche and Noire, Persan, Jacqu\u00e8re, and Gringet.<\/p>\n<p>The vineyards are set within Alpine scenery, with stony and limestone soils derived from erosion. Most of the soils are composed of limestone or rather limestone scree that has fallen from the mountains, forming a terroir that is particularly well-suited to white wine growing.<\/p>\n<p>The Vin de Savoie\u00a0or AOC Savoie denomination is divided into <strong>21 sub-appellations<\/strong> including Ayze, Apremont, Arbin, Chignin and Seyssel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_large\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Burgundy<\/h2>\n<p>Burgundy enjoys an <strong>exceptional geographical location<\/strong>. But that is not all. It also has ideal weather conditions for winegrowing, diverse geology, highly reputed grape varieties and a number of exceptional vineyard plots known as <em>climats<\/em>. Burgundy has no less than 84 world-famous appellations.<\/p>\n<p>Burgundy is made from Pinot Noir or Chardonnay and wines are divided into <strong>four categories of appellation<\/strong>, with 7 regional AOCs, 44 village AOCs (these include Premier Cru villages) and 33 Grand Cru AOCs. Vineyard plots here are referred to as <em><strong>climats<\/strong>, <\/em>a term specific to Burgundy<em>.<\/em> These <em>climats <\/em>are spread across <strong>five main subregions<\/strong>: Chablis and Grand Auxerrois, C\u00f4te de Nuits, C\u00f4te de Beaune, C\u00f4te Chalonnaise and the M\u00e2connais. Burgundy is internationally famous and wine tourism is one of the region\u2019s main industries.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_large\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_flex valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Rhone Valley<\/h2>\n<p>The Rhone Valley wine region has two quite distinct parts, the <strong>northern Rhone<\/strong> and the <strong>southern Rhone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>northern Rhone<\/strong>, which runs from Vienne to Valence, is home to several premium appellations known for their predominantly Syrah-based reds: C\u00f4te-R\u00f4tie, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Cornas. It also has some famous whites like Condrieu and Ch\u00e2teau-Grillet, made exclusively from Viognier, and Saint-Peray made exclusively with Marsanne and Roussanne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The southern Rhone<\/strong> between Mont\u00e9limar and Avignon is home to great appellations like Vinsobres, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes de Venise, Lirac, Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape, Tavel and Rasteau, to name a few.
