The region of Burgundy, in north-eastern France, is 250 kilometres long from north to south and has 25,000 hectares (62k acres) of vineyards. Although nearly five times smaller than Bordeaux, Burgundy is home to great diversity with its 84 different AOC or appellations d\u2019origine contr\u00f4l\u00e9es<\/em>. This unique and complex wine region is also one of the oldest in France<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

4 Main Geographical Areas<\/h2>\n

Viticulturally speaking, Burgundy can be divided into four different areas.<\/p>\n

In the North, towards Yonne, you find the Chablis, Auxerrois and Tonnerrois wine regions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the centre of the region, you have the C\u00f4te d\u2019Or<\/strong> with its two sub-regions, the C\u00f4te de Nuit and C\u00f4te de Beaune. This area is renowned for delicate, cherry-coloured reds and white wines such as Corton-Charlemagne and Montrachet.<\/p>\n

Further south is the C\u00f4te Chalonnaise<\/strong> with its fruity red wines and silvery coloured whites.<\/p>\n

Last but not least, you have the M\u00e2connais<\/strong>, which produces mostly dry white wines<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Grape Varieties<\/h2>\n

Burgundy\u2019s particularity is that its wines are almost exclusively single varietal wines.<\/p>\n

Chardonnay<\/h3>\n

The Chardonnay <\/strong>grape, which is used to make white Burgundy, is a variety which brings hazelnut, almond and white flower aromas to the wines. Despite being rather sensitive to springtime frost, it is an easy grape to grow as it adapts well to a wide range of soils.<\/p>\n

Pinot Noir<\/h3>\n

Pinot Noir<\/strong>, which is used for red Burgundy, gives ruby-coloured wines with rather supple tannins. It is a very early grape, making it trickier to grow than Chardonnay.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Appellation Hierarchy: A Pyramid System<\/h2>\n

The Burgundy wine region has a four-tier hierarchy:<\/p>\n

Regional appellations<\/h3>\n

These include a wide variety of wines in white, red or ros\u00e9, including appellations such as AOC Burgundy, AOC Bourgogne Aligot\u00e9 and AOC Cr\u00e9mant de Bourgogne. These wines are at the base of the pyramid.<\/p>\n

Commune Appellations<\/h3>\n

These wines are named after their commune (or village) of origin, such as Chablis, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Roman\u00e9e, Meursault or Gevrey-Chambertin.<\/p>\n

Premiers Crus<\/h3>\n

These are wines that come from individual vineyard plots. These plots of vines, also known as climats<\/em>, have very specific topographical, climatic or geological features. There are as many as 500 of them. Premier Cru wines are on the upper end of the quality scale.<\/p>\n

Grands Crus<\/h3>\n

To be referred to as a Grand Cru, a wine must come from one of the 33 climats<\/em>acknowledged as particularly special (Corton Charlemagne, Chambertin, etc).
